Messi Eyes Club World Cup Goal Record As Inter Miami Prepare For Al Ahly Clash

Lionel Messi

Inter Miami and Argentina national team captain Lionel Messi is on the brink of breaking one of football’s most prestigious scoring records as the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off this weekend.

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, currently has five goals in the competition, just two behind all-time joint leaders Cristiano Ronaldo and Brazilian legend Pele, who both sit on seven goals.

With neither Ronaldo nor Pele participating, Pele having passed away and Ronaldo’s team failing to qualify, Messi has a golden opportunity to surpass them.

Messi, 36, will represent Inter Miami in the newly expanded 32-team format of the FIFA Club World Cup. The Major League Soccer side has been placed in Group A alongside African giants Al Ahly, Brazilian champions Palmeiras, and Portuguese heavyweights FC Porto.

Inter Miami will begin their campaign at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, against Al Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Messi is expected to lead the charge as the Herons aim to secure an opening win and progress in the tournament.

Victory in the competition and the potential scoring milestone would add yet another chapter to Messi’s already illustrious career, as he seeks to make history on home soil in the United States.
