
The Ogun State Government has unveiled two transformative initiatives aimed at preventing plastic pollution and championing a circular economy while creating opportunities for people in the business value.
The State’s Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya disclosed this on Monday, while speaking at an event held commemoration of the 2025 World Environment Day.
The year’s celebration themed, “Beating Plastic Pollution” was held at the Olowu of Owu palace, in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The Commissioner noted that the Abiodun-led administration have embraced the global call to action to beat plastic pollution, with local innovation and practical commitment in enhancing the potentials in the plastic management ecosystems.
Oresanya explained that the initiatives named, Plastic for Cash would enable residents exchange sorted plastic waste for cash and other value-based items, thereby not only reducing pollution but also creating economic opportunities for our youths, women, and low-income earners.
While the Blue Box Initiative, driven by the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), is a structured, house-to-house waste segregation system, enabling residents to separate recyclables from organic and general waste at the point of generation.
He said, “ Today, we proudly unveil two transformative initiatives aimed at preventing plastic pollution and championing a circular
economy.
“ The Plastic for Cash Initiative This initiative is not just a policy—it is a movement. A movement to incentivize behavioral change. Through this program, residents will be able to exchange sorted plastic waste for cash and other value-based items. By turning waste into wealth,
we not only reduce pollution but also create economic opportunities, particularly for our youths, women, and low-income earners.
“The Introduction of the Blue Box Initiative Primarily driven by the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), the Blue Box Initiative introduces a structured, house-to-house waste segregation, system, enabling residents to separate recyclables from organic and general waste at the point of generation”.
The commissioner asserted that the move is to ensure efficient collection, enhances recycling, and reduces landfill burden, adding that the combination of these two initiatives forms the backbone of the government’s strategy to mainstream waste-to-wealth, promote environmental responsibility, and drive climate-smart urban development.
