A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna, Kaduna State, has sentenced one Stephen Adeoti to three years imprisonment for internet fraud.
Justice R.M. Aikawa delivered the judgment after Adeoti pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of impersonation and cybercrime brought against him by the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
According to the EFCC, Adeoti, who operated under the alias “Anonymous Collective,” fraudulently impersonated the identity on Facebook between January and April 2025, with the intent to gain advantage for himself.
The offence, the Commission said, contravenes Section 22(2)(b)(i) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, and is punishable under Section 22(2)(b)(iv) of the same Act.
Upon his guilty plea, prosecution counsel M.E. Eimonye urged the court to convict him accordingly.
Justice Aikawa sentenced Adeoti to three years imprisonment with an option of N400,000 fine. The court also ordered the forfeiture of an iPhone 7, which he used to commit the crime, to the Federal Government.
His arrest followed credible intelligence that uncovered his fraudulent activities in Bida, Niger State.
