Benue: They burnt 20 of my family members alive – Survivor recounts ordeal

A survivor of the recent attack in Yelwata, Benue State has shared the harrowing experience of losing all his family members in the tragedy.

Michael Ajah, in a video aired by News Central, which has now gone viral on social media, said he lost 20 members of his family.

Recounting how their homes were set ablaze by those he described as ‘Fulani people,’ he added that 11 members of his family died in one house while all his goods and property were razed down and lost in the ensuing blaze during the attack.

“My whole family members died the day before yesterday. There were 20 of them, that is my own family members. I’m not talking about any other thing. That’s my own family members.

“This is my store[pointing to a burnt shop]. They burnt my clothes. They burnt everything. They burnt our food, all my family members.

“What we came out with are the clothes we were wearing on that day. On that day, rain started in the evening, so we entered.

“I slept there[pointing to the house]. So I was sleeping around 10:20[pm] we heard gun shots at the back there[pointing to the back] so before we could notice that something has happened, Fulani men entered this place. ”

Asked how he knew the attackers were Fulani men, he said, “Because they were speaking and I was inside the room, and I heard them clearly.

“Nobody told me. I was inside the room there, and they surrounded that room. I escaped narrowly. My brothers burnt in this house, some escaped. My dad, burnt in this house.”

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on his scheduled visit, amid rising concerns over recent violent attacks in the state that have claimed several lives.

The President touched down at the Makurdi Airport, located at the Tactical Air Command of the Nigerian Air Force Base, at approximately 12:58 pm on Tuesday.

He is scheduled to meet with key stakeholders in the state, following the massacre in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area, which sparked outrage across the country.
