Sexual Harassment Allegations: Group calls for swift resolution of Natasha, Akpabio case

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has called on the Senate President, Godwin Akpabio, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, and all implicated individuals to act responsibly, cooperate fully with investigations, and contribute to the swift and just resolution of the allegations of sexual harassment and tragic murder case of late Miss Iniubong Umoren.

NYCN said the allegations, seized the attention of the nation, demands immediate, transparent, and responsible action to resolve the issues for the country to move.

Isah Abubakar, National President of NYCN, in a statement said, “These include serious allegations of sexual harassment against Senator Godswill Akpabio, the tragic murder case of late Miss Iniubong Umoren, though the family has cleared the air on that and exonerated the Senate President but the senator is very much convinced that Akpabio has hands in it.

‘NYCN explained that the youths firmly believed that integrity, transparency, and accountability are the bedrock of the nation’s democracy, warning that allegations of this nature not only affects the individuals involved but also have profound implications for the reputation of the legislative body, the trust the public places in the political system, and the very fabric of the society.

In light of the sexual harassment allegations leveled against Senator Godswill Akpabio, Abubakar respectfully called upon Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to provide concrete evidence to substantiate her claims.

He added, “It is imperative that we approach such serious accusations with an unwavering commitment to truth and justice. While we acknowledge the extreme sensitivity of this issue, we must emphasize that unsubstantiated claims can lead to irreversible damage to reputations and perpetuate a cycle of mistrust within our political institutions.”

Abubakar said, “As the Northern Youth Council, we are dedicated to advocating for justice and fairness for all individuals, particularly those who have experienced harassment. We recognize the importance of amplifying the voices of victims, but we also stress that accusations must be grounded in factual evidence. The absence of such evidence can regrettably lead to a miscarriage of justice, as we have seen in the past, where individuals have faced severe consequences based solely on unproven allegations.”

He stated that the youths hold their leaders to the highest standards of conduct, and urged Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to take immediate and decisive action in addressing the critical issue.

The group implored Senator Natasha to communicate her next steps clearly to the public, as transparency in this matter is paramount.
