Brendan Rodgers Backs Kelechi Iheanacho To Shine At Celtic

Brendan Rodgers Backs Kelechi Iheanacho

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has tipped new signing Kelechi Iheanacho to flourish in Glasgow, describing the Nigerian forward as a player “right in his peak years” who can make a big contribution to the Scottish champions.

Iheanacho joined Celtic on a free transfer after leaving Sevilla, sealing a one-year deal just before the Europa League registration deadline. The move reunited him with Rodgers, under whom he previously played at Leicester City.

Speaking on the club’s website, Rodgers was full of praise for the 28-year-old striker. “He is such a talented player, with great ability, athleticism and work-rate,” the manager said. “He has great experience and he is right in his peak years, so he can be a great signing for us. I am sure he will make a big contribution to the team.”

The transfer came against the backdrop of criticism from supporters, who had been frustrated by the club’s lack of activity in the final hours of the transfer window.

The Affiliation of Celtic Supporters Clubs even condemned the decision to sell Adam Idah to Swansea City without securing a replacement, accusing the board of being in “disarray.”

Rodgers, however, insisted Iheanacho brings the quality and pedigree to silence the doubts. “He will love being at Celtic and I believe our fans will love what he brings,” the coach added.

Iheanacho’s career began at Manchester City, where he lifted the League Cup in 2016 before making over 200 appearances for Leicester City, helping them win the FA Cup in 2021. On the international stage, he has earned 59 caps for Nigeria and was part of the squad that reached the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.

The striker most recently played for Sevilla but spent the end of last season on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship.
