Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, wrapped up their 2025 FIBA AfroBasket journey with a fifth-place finish.
The tournament, staged in Angola from August 12 to 24, saw the D’Tigers make a bright start under coach Mohammed Abdulrahman.
The Nigerian men’s basketball side swept through the group phase with convincing wins over Madagascar, Tunisia, and Cameroon, topping Group B with six points and raising hopes of a deep run.
However, the momentum was cut short in the quarter-finals as Nigeria suffered a 91-75 defeat to Senegal, who later went on to claim bronze. The loss ended Nigeria’s bid for a second AfroBasket crown, following their triumph in 2015.
Despite the disappointment, D’Tigers regrouped strongly to secure a top-five finish in the final standings, ending with three wins from four games.
They ranked just behind Angola, Mali, Senegal, and Cameroon, while staying ahead of North African powerhouse Egypt, the Ivory Coast, and Cape Verde.
The team’s performance, though not medal-winning, is seen as a step forward after inconsistent showings in recent years.
Attention now shifts to November, when D’Tigers will begin their campaign in the FIBA Men’s World Cup Qualifiers. The target is clear, to book a spot at the 2027 edition in Qatar, after missing out on the 2023 tournament.
