‘Our hearts are shattered’ – Rep Philip Agbese laments rising attacks in Benue

The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has expressed deep sorrow over the persistent wave of violence and killings in parts of Benue State, describing the situation as heartbreaking and unacceptable.

In a statement issued on Monday, Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, decried the recent attack in Yelwata community, Guma Local Government Area, where scores were killed by suspected armed herdsmen.

Agbese condemned the failure of the relevant authorities to contain the violence despite repeated appeals, warning that the continuous silence from critical stakeholders could be interpreted as complicity.

“Our hearts are shattered. Benue has endured more bloodshed than any state should bear. We are tired of burying our people. We are tired of watching families destroyed and farmlands deserted. This carnage must stop,” the lawmaker said.

He called on the Federal Government, security agencies, and all well-meaning Nigerians to intervene swiftly, noting that what is happening in Benue is not only a security crisis but a humanitarian emergency.

Agbese also urged unity among Benue citizens, regardless of party or ethnic affiliations, and declared a three-day period of prayer and fasting, calling on religious and traditional leaders to stand in the gap for the state.

“The situation is dire. Beyond politics, beyond religion, beyond tribe, we must come together as one people. The blood of our fathers, mothers, and children cries from the ground,” Agbese said.

He added that the House of Representatives will intensify its oversight and ensure that those responsible for the killings are brought to justice, promising to raise a motion on the floor of the House to demand urgent action.
