John Obi Mikel Says Chelsea Had a Player More Important Than Frank Lampard

Chelsea Football Club has enjoyed the presence of legendary players like Frank Lampard, whose remarkable goal-scoring record still stands as a testament to his impact.
However, according to a report by The Daily Express on Thursday, October 9, 2025, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel believes that John Terry was more vital to the club’s success than Lampard.
Mikel praises Lampard as a model professional and one of the best trainers during his time at Chelsea, emphasizing his crucial contributions in big matches and his status as the club’s all-time top scorer.
Yet, when asked who was more important to Chelsea’s success, Mikel ultimately singled out John Terry.
He described Terry as a vocal and commanding leader who drove the team to perform at their best, contrasting his leadership style with Lampard’s more reserved approach.
“JT is very vocal and a real captain on the field,” Mikel explained. “He’s the guy who keeps everyone alert. If you’re not playing your best, he’ll come and tell you to wake up. You had to be at your best around him there was no room for half-hearted effort.”
While acknowledging Lampard’s significant role, Mikel expressed that Terry’s influence was irreplaceable: “Super Frank scored important goals and helped us win big matches, but if I have to choose, I’d say John Terry was more important to Chelsea.”
Despite his admiration for the club and its current squad, Mikel has voiced concerns about Chelsea’s recent performances.
He praised Moises Caicedo’s recent display against Liverpool but has been critical of certain players, including Filip Jorgensen and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, reflecting his ongoing passion and high standards for the club’s success.
