“They Don’t Understand My Style of Play”— Cunha Reveals that Ruben Amorim Has Failed to Use Him Well

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha has voiced his frustration over how he has been used under manager Ruben Amorim, suggesting that his true playing style has been misunderstood since joining the club. The Brazilian, who completed a £62.5 million transfer from Wolves in the summer, revealed that he has always been more of a midfielder than a striker, despite being deployed as one at Old Trafford.

In a recent interview with Globo, Cunha opened up about the growing confusion surrounding his role, claiming that fans and even his own manager often mistake his natural tendencies on the pitch. “They don’t understand my style of play,” Cunha said. “I came up as a midfielder, not a striker. I think that because I play for Manchester United and people follow me more closely, they’re beginning to understand how I really play.”

The Brazilian went on to reflect on how his transition to the professional game altered perceptions about his position. “I came to the national team with this stereotype of a number nine. But in truth, I played my entire youth career as a midfielder. When I became a professional, I entered this world of 4-3-3 where you either play centre-forward, winger, or number eight,” he explained.

Cunha also hinted that Amorim’s tactical system has restricted his creative freedom. “They eliminated the real midfielder position, and you have to adapt,” he added. “But I see it positively because it gives me experience in other roles, even if it’s not how I like to play naturally.”

Despite his frustrations, Cunha has been one of United’s most active players this season, contributing with energy and vision in attack. However, his comments raise questions about whether Amorim’s rigid system is truly getting the best out of him.
