Football Stars At Risk of Missing World Cup
The race to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in North America is intensifying, with many major footballing nations still fighting to secure their spots. While more than half of the 48 tournament places have already been decided, several top countries face the risk of missing out, putting some of the world’s best players in jeopardy of sitting out the finals.

In Europe, Italy is one of the biggest nations at risk. They are set to finish second in UEFA Group I behind Norway, meaning stars like Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolo Barella, and Sandro Tonali will have to navigate the tricky playoff route to avoid missing a third consecutive World Cup.
Sweden also faces playoffs after a disappointing group stage, putting strikers Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres in danger of missing out. Georgia is third in Group E, making it highly unlikely that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will feature in the World Cup. Ireland, led by Evan Ferguson, are third in Group F and must overcome a difficult challenge to reach the playoffs. Serbia’s chances are also uncertain after a defeat to Albania, which could mark another setback in Dusan Vlahovic’s career.
Turkey and Poland are heading for the playoffs, putting players such as Robert Lewandowski, Kenan Yildiz, and Arda Guler at risk.
In Africa, Nigeria and Cameroon narrowly advanced from their groups to the playoffs, meaning stars like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Andre Onana face the possibility of missing the tournament.
As the qualification process reaches its climax, many high-profile players may be forced to watch the 2026 World Cup from home, highlighting just how competitive and unpredictable the road to the finals can be.
